Rag Rug

I am making a rag rug. I made one several years ago for my kitchen and I absolutely love it, so I decided to make a second one. This one is in all different shades of green fabrics, in patterns and solids. I already had some of my fabric (some recycled from old clothes), and others I snagged up on sale around St. Patrick’s Day. I’ve been working on the rug inconsistently for about two and a half months.

I started by tearing my fabric into strips, ironing them so they ends are tucked in neatly, and then rolling them into balls of fabric (don’t let my flippant description of that fool you—it takes FOREVER).

I am using a little bit different crochet stitch for this rug. I love the other one, but I just wanted to try a new stitch for some variety. This tutorial from Sugar Bee Crafts helped me out when I was trying to get the rug started. Also, I don’t crochet or knit, so that’s how you know this is pretty easy to do :)

My current rug is looking much more like a bowl, but I think it will flatten out as I keep adding stitches. As you can see I still have a long way to go!

  2. It’s so beautiful! I have really been wanting to make one. I am going to save that tutorial and hopefully I can get started soon!

Elizabeth, you need to increase the stitch in the diferents rows in order to make the rug flat. First you make the magic ring, then, in the first row increase all the stitches (by adding one extra loop called single crochet when you finish your point, so you start the next stitch from the extra loop, this will enlarge your rug).
In the next row, you increase 1 stitch and not the other.
In the third row, you increase 1 stitch from 3 and so on.

    Google “increasing round crochet”.

If you don´t increase the rows, they go up, and you´ll have a beautiful basket.

Good luck, I’m starting to make my rug too!
