Coffee & Crema

Monday, October 24th, 2011

I went out for coffee with my new friend Kelly to this great little local shop, Coffee & Crema. We had a great time, and our discussion focused on things Asian, since Kelly used to live in China.

Topics discussed included North Korea, the time Kelly stayed in a village in Mongolia, and the book Mao: The Unknown Story (pictured below) that Kelly has been brave enough to tackle. We have it on our bookshelf but I’ve never considered reading it until we talked about it the other night over pretty cups of Tahitian coffee…somehow that made it seem like it has fewer pages.

a leaf in my cup! love

I love great conversation over a good cup of coffee! It’s so wonderful to be inspired by my friends to keep learning…just because I’m an adult and finished with college doesn’t mean I should be done learning new things. (It sure is nice to be done with grades and testing though!)

What are some ways you’ve found are good outlets for learning as an adult? I personally enjoy documentaries, because it’s a fast way to gather a lot of interesting information about a subject. Books are of course fantastic, they just take me awhile!

morning reading

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

Awhile back I reflected here on the blog about being addicted to technology and not making enough time to read, learn, and sit still. (Read that here.)

Since then I’ve been making an effort to focus more, read more, and study more, but I’ve gotten quite caught up in all the new studio preparations and am only just now getting settled back into a “normal” routine so I haven’t had much of an update to share.

Today I am finally ready to discuss a new little tradition that I’m completely in love with:

morning porch reading

Since I’ve been spending time perfecting my little porch garden this summer the natural idea was to get up early in the morning, make coffee, and read on our screened-in porch. For me, this has become the perfect way to wake up, and I would feel lucky to be able to keep this habit always. (Even if it means one day getting up suuuuper early before my children wake up…I imagine that’s the kind of thing you need to do to keep sanity during your motherhood years, right?)

So I sit outside and read, and enjoy the morning calm and my pretty flowers, sans computer and phone. And Ben usually joins me. And we both sit and read in the quiet, because no one is ready for conversation first thing in the morning, are they?

Now I just need to find a way to make a living from a magical combination of reading, writing, learning languages, traveling, and making headbands…I’m totally working on it!

a few reflections

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

when did you last get lost in a book? go a few hours without phone or computer? sit still to write, study, or have a meaningful conversation?

it’s been awhile for me.

technology feeds my fading attention span.

I can’t sit still to read anymore.

(seriously, it’s like 15 minutes max.)

I’m afraid I’m forgetting how to learn.

I think everyone who has ever done anything important or wonderful in the world was a great reader and learner.

now that I’m finally done with school I can focus on things I’ve been putting off—like learning a new language and tackling the BBC’s top 100 booklist. (that should keep me busy for a few years, right??)

but instead I read tweets and blogs and status updates.

I don’t hate technology.

(I’m writing this for my blog after all!)

I have been continually inspired by many blogs and enjoy keeping up with my friends.

but i need more balance.

I can’t forget to read words printed on a page.

talk face to face.

write letters.

and sit still.

life without television?

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

I saw this graffiti on an old neglected factory while driving through an industrial section of our town. who would write that? and why there? I am completely intrigued… I took my own interpretation of it, and decided my life without television would include a lot more reading!

what would you do?
